Dubai International is the 5th busiest airport in the world in terms of international passenger traffic volumes offering connections to over 210 destinations across six continents on 125 airlines. It is the only airport among the world’s top ten airports by international passenger traffic to have recorded positive quarterly growth throughout 2008 and 2009.
Annual passenger traffic at Dubai International is forecast to increase by 13.6% in 2010 to reach 46 million.
In terms of international freight volumes, Dubai International is the world’s 4th busiest airport. Despite the global downturn in international freight throughout 2009, Dubai Airports Cargo is holding its own with marginal fluctuations in year on year freight volumes. Dubai Airports Cargo handled 1.82 million tonnes of freight in 2008, a year on year growth of 9.4 per cent.
Following the opening of the Emirates-dedicated Terminal 3 in October 2008, widely acknowledged as the most successful launch of a terminal of its size, Dubai International is well on its way to becoming a world-leading aviation hub. Terminal 3 has doubled Dubai International’s operational capacity to 60 million passengers per year, a figure that will increase to 75 million with the completion of the now under-construction A380-dedicated airside facility.
